Transactional Analysis

TA Beginnings

TA was founded by Eric Berne in the 1950’s/1960’s. He proposed that our present and future was highly influenced by our past, and through bringing the unconscious decisions we’ve made into awareness, individuals could make conscious choices for their present. Berne focused on the transactions between people, and within our internal dialogue.

He recognized that each client he saw had three main ‘Ego-States’ which he catergorised as the Parent Ego State, the Adult Ego State and the Child Ego State.

This became the central model for TA, with Berne’s aim to create a language that therapist and client could share- this was radical thinking for the time.

TA Now

Over the years TA has developed and evolved however it continues to hold the belief that everyone is inherently OK (I am OK, You’re OK), that everyone has the capacity to think and influence their lives and that people are free to change their mind and evolve.

There are many books and articles about TA, and for those wanting to delve deeper into these theories Transactional Analysis Cymru run regular 101 Introduction to TA weekends. Please click on this link to be directed to TAC’s 101 page.

TA Training

Transactional analysis (TA) training is a rigorous four year journey for the core training, with requirements of ongoing therapy, supervision and CPD. I continued to train in a professional development group whilst I worked with client’s over a four year basis before gaining my level 7 Certified Transactional Analyst qualification in 2025.
